Two weekends ago, I attended The Conversation, an all-day conference about the future of independent film funding, marketing and distribution. The program for The Conversation consisted of panels, discussion groups and breakout sessions, each featuring both indie fllm stalwarts (Eugene Hernandez, Scott Macaulay, Bob Hawk) and new media trailblazers (Lance Weiler, Arin Crumley.

it was made clear during The Conversation that filmmakers are having to work harder than ever for increasingly smaller pieces of pie. As panelist Richard Lorber, CEO of distributor Kino Lorber, put it, “everything’s possible but nothing’s working.”

Just as everyone was getting ready to collectively throw up their hands in despair and looked for the nearest exit, The Conversation co-host Scott Kirsner reminded us that when the film business started over a hundred years ago, when somebody started charging people to watch thirty-second reels in a kinetoscope parlor on Fifth Avenue, the average weekend box office was $120.

“I think if you were in Manhattan back then, you would have said ‘this isn’t really storytelling, this isn’t an art form, and this certainly isn’t a business,’” Kirsner said from behind his podium. “I think we’re in a similar moment right now. It doesn’t feel like a business yet, but those of us in this room are the early pioneers, ignoring the warning signals that eventually won’t mean anything.”

In the mean time, events like The Conversation are helping bring like-minded pioneers together to share and experiment so that one day, the independent film business can truly be a business again.

The 21 Hour Theatre Festival

I participated in The 21 Hour Theatre Festival over the weekend at the Wings Theatre in New York City. A very cool event. How it worked was Friday night, myself and the other writers met with the show's Producer, who randomly distributed our topics. This year the theme was the paranormal and my topic which I was to cover in my piece was ghosts. In addition, we were tasked to include an animal and a specific line of dialogue in our one acts, which were to be turned in the following morning, Saturday, so that the director could get to work rehearing with the actors. All six plays were performed that same day at 5pm and 7pm.

Overall, I found this type of project very challenging to participate in as a writer. You're really put on the spot to come up with something on the fly. It's one of the most difficult ways in which to write as typically -at least in my case- a writer cannot force an idea into being. It sorta has to come to you out of an inspiration. In my experience it's usually behavior I see, hear about or, most preferred, something that happens to me directly. To put a time limit on the process, I found to be a real challenge.

My New Film Project - The Eternal Boyfriend

I am currently writing a feature length script that is a modern adaptation of a Fyodor Dostoevsky (Crime and Punishment author) novella. Published in 1870, its original title is The Eternal Husband. The story centers around a depressed man who is confronted by his dead mistress’s husband in a psychological tale of duality. One of the esteemed Russian author’s most powerful and accessible tales, it employs his favorite themes of mental torture and neurosis. Captivating and highly revealing, it explores love, guilt, and hatred.

My modern version is titled, The Eternal Boyfriend, and I am in the pre-production stages of this low budget project at the moment. I hope to be completely done the script by March and have a trailer shot in New York City during the Spring. Before I auditioned tho, I was chilling at my agency, C.E.S.D. and guess who walked in? Flo from the Progessive Insurance campaign. Always having my trusty HD camera on me, I captured this little video of her and I right before we were married. Guess who has Insurance now??? Hahahaa.

I recently booked a Wendy's commercial in which I play a greasey-haired employee of a fast food competitor. In addition to actually putting some sort of heavy oil in my hair, the director instructed the make-up department, "His teeth are too white. Throw some black stuff on them." And they proceeded to put some awful tasting makeup on my chompers. Overall, it was a fun day.

I was recently interviewed for a standup comedy site called Bigbencomedy. The crux of the interview was my personal take on technology and standup comedy and in what ways I use social media to promote my own comedy career.

Here is an excerpt from the inteview:
Ben, you and I have talked about this issue in the past and I’ve expressed that I believe that it isn’t that smart to post videos of your standup if you aren’t a somewhat polished comic. I’ve booked some first timers on my show and I’ve seen them immediately put up an entire 8 minute video of themselves performing an under-developed act. I mean this is fine if it’s not going to be a CAREER for you, some guys just do it for fun only and post a video of it in an un-serious way so Mom can watch it. But if this is a career choice then I think you need to think about not releasing the product until it’s in some sort of professionally acceptable shape, and even then I recommend small chunks of no more than two minutes. If it’s a Live at Gotham or a Conan set then obviously put the whole thing up.

This is Why I'm Single - The Play- by Jonesy

I wrote, directed, and produced a comedic play earlier this month. This is Why I'm Single was an ensemble performance consisting of nine scenes of love going hilariously wrong. It was written for and performed by my acting class (Anthony Abeson - teacher - who assisted me in directing).

The scenes ranged from an interview for a wingman, a man cockblocked on a date by his nut allergy, and bachelor party for a dead bachelor. All are very weird, funny, and completely original concepts.

The showdates were July 22nd and 23rd - two shows each night at the Royal Theatre (The Producer's Club). I am thrilled to report that all four shows sold out and we had to turn away many others that showed up to buy tickets at the door.

We shot it on the run in Penn Station and it was a miracle we didn't get thrown out. During the shoot a security actually removed a drunk man that was harassing US, and security said NOTHING to us about the camera and our shenanigans.

Just Bring It! Standup Comedy Show at the new EastVille Comedy Club is a show that I have produced now for over one month. Since the show's inception I've had a plethora of star comics on the show. Last night featured the UK comic sensation, Jimmy Carr, fresh off his Conan Obrien taping earlier in the day, Jimmy worked on his 22 minute Comedy Central Presents Jimmy Carr set, which tapes this weekend here in New York City. (See pic BOTTOM of me with Jimmy (suit) and superstar comedian Todd Barry.)
Also on the show, ALSO fresh off a Comedy Central Presents taping, was the great and hilarious Brian Scolaro (TOP pic). He actually had me laughing at a fart joke. And I haven't laughed at a fart joke since I was twelve. THAT'S how good Scolaro is. Check out his myspace HERE.

This is the first of what will be a series of spots I recorded for Verizon Wireless. It's the "Youth Man on the Street" campaign and all the commercials are intended to be high energy, humorous, and targeted at the 18-24 year old market. This first spot was recorded at the University of Colorado campus - I went to three different colleges over a span of three weeks and interviewed countless students on camera about their wireless service. In my attempt to make the interviews as funny as possible I used my improv skills AND my beatbox skills. :) Check it out.

I'm the voice of a character in the new videogame, Frontlines: Fuel of War. My character is a guy named Joe Mikowski, a 24 year old Private, 1st class on the Stray Dogs unit. He is from Boston and has a thick accent (that's how I got the job).

So I used to be in this musical comedy duo with writer/comedian Brett Anderson called Songs in the Key of Cheese. We played CHEESEY love song covers from the 80's such as Air Supply, Peter Cetera, the Bee Gees, Foreigner, Patrick Swayze, even New Kids on the Block if you can believe that. Production: “The Health Insurance Song,” a comedic photo montage set to a song parody, came about after songwriter-comedian Chris Jones (who performs under the name “Jonesy”) was hospitalized with a head injury in 2005. Faced with massive medical bills, Jonesy attempted to save money by removing his own stitches at home. The results were disastrous enough to inspire him to write “The Health Insurance Song,” a musical parody highlighting the plight of Americans without healthcare. Jonesy often incorporates music into his standup act, and he decided to create a video montage set to “The Health Insurance Song” to draw attention to his pet cause and his abilities as an entertainer. The video, which he edited himself, intersperses pictures of protesters, stock medical photos and illustrations of dangerous activities he’d attempt if he had coverage. In addition to the usual video-sharing sites, he attempted to capitalize on this election year’s crop of young voters hitting news sites such as Reddit and Digg, cause blogs like Barely Political and social-networking groups. “The Health Insurance Song” and other Jonesy videos can be found at his home site, http://www.funnyjones.com.

Result: The video was picked up by DailyMotion.com, which featured it in its “news” section. Jonesy estimates the video has garnered around 25,000 hits on the top five sharing sites, but laments that his "Annoying Hot Girl at the Party" video, which lacks a message but has a cute girl as its thumbnail, is still more popular by several thousand views.

Hippie Busters! - episode 1

Back in Boston my good friend and comedian Erik Tynan and I came up with two characters that would become the basis for my new comedy web series, The Hippie Busters. This series is a parody of the CSI's and Law and Order's of the television world. It follows the antics of detectives Milt McCray and Skip Skipson as they track down, arrest, and oftentimes beat those smelly, tree-huggin, no showering, pot-smoking HIPPIES! I made two short videos that document that melting of the giant glacier in my refrigerator. Part I gives an overall explanation of the galcier's history and our new and improved melting methods. The Hostel Comedy Show

We are coming up on the three year anniversary of the day that I began running the "Hostile Comedy Show". For those of you that aren't familiar it is a standup comedy show that takes place at the biggest hostel in the world -Hostel International. It is located on Manhattan's upper west side. I've been lucky in that over the years I have had a pool of great comics to book from and the foreigners - at least the ones that spoke English the night of the show - have been receptive.

In this latest episode (number 4 in the series) Tumbleweed, the world's first "Crapper" (country rapper) gets some insightful advice from a legit New York City emcee. In addition, the sketch entitled "Cooties" was one of the featured videos on YoutTube as of today!

I produced a comedy show at a Drug Rehab Center

...last week. My stand-up comedian buddies and I put on a free show for the patients at a live-in 24 hour drug rehab facility in Jamaica, Queens.(From left to right: Cooper Rego, Ben Boime, myself, and Scott aka "Hogwild". Between the drug rehab and the hostel I really seem to have a handle on how to make money telling jokes, haha. (that was sarcasm btw)

This past Saturday I had a meeting with my DP -John R.- regarding my upcoming short film "Tube This!". We laid out a tentative skeleton of a schedule and it looks like shooting will begin the second weekend of September. On Friday I went by my agency C.E.S.D. and browsed through some headshots in the theatrical department. I found 5 or 6 female actors that could potentially work out as the girl in my flick. One of them is a regular on a Soap Opera. Stay tuned for more on "Tube This!"
